It's sad how I learned about this new face on this once thriving block of Kearny Street. Back in the day, this block housed a Burger King, the ORIGINAL Mrs. Field's Cookie store (around the corner), the flagship Specialty's Bakery, Ramen Underground, and a number of other popular lunch crowd eateries. Fast forward and going sideways, the news reported a yet-to-be open business that was vandalized and robbed before they even opened. Yes, this was it. They even cleaned out their beer and alcohol shelves. While walking by for a business lunch, I saw the posted menu and made it a point to try it the following week. I called the business but it automatically goes to a voicemail message and asks the caller to leave a message. I wanted to find out whether dine-in was an option here. After completing some tasks nearby, I went online and ordered through the Yelp app that's managed by GrubHub and decided to order food for takeout. When I arrived, I saw several occupied tables to the right of the kitchen while checking in at the cashier. After speaking with the greeter/waitress, I asked whether it was too late to change my order to a dine-in meal. She asked the kitchen who agreed to do it. I walked downstairs to their other dining room and seated myself at a window two-top. After she brought me a glass of water, my meal started coming a few minutes later. First came the Hanetsuki gyoza (yelp.com/user_local_phot…), their house made pork dumplings with thin crispy "hane" crust, served with soy-chili sauce; the presentation is certainly different (more in line with ones served in Taiwanese restaurants). I enjoyed this though the crust is half soft half crisp, especially with the soy vinegar dipping sauce. Next came the Tonkotsu shoyu ramen (yelp.com/user_local_phot…), soy sauce based Tonkatsu with braised Berkshire pork belly slices, marinated soft-boiled egg, lotus root, black mushroom (actually wood ear), bamboo shoot, green onion, and pickled red ginger; served with thin straight noodles, there was no shortage of ingredients and the broth was tasty. I would have enjoyed this more if the noodles were firm or chewy. My side arrived shortly after my ramen, the Hourenso goma ae (yelp.com/user_local_phot…), blanched spinach salad in a sweet savory sesame sauce; this was a good flavor change from the two other dishes I ordered. The portions are generous so I took half of the gyoza and half of this home to accompany another meal. The waitress was kind and generous in checking on my water and filling my request for togarashi. There were four tables occupied as I dined besides mine, two four seaters and two two seaters. The food rates 3.5 stars for me but bumping this review a star for satisfying my requests. Please remember that this is a chain restaurant so do temper your expectations.

Have been meaning to try this Hakata Tonkotsu ramen joint since hearing about this place on the news. I visited during the lunch period on a weekday and was sat on the lower level near the window. Spacious dining room. Ordered hanetsuki 羽付きgyoza $9 and their signature Hiroshi Tonkotsu ramen $15. The ramen comes with half an egg, wood ear mushrooms/fungus, a slice of lotus root, 2 slices of chashu, red ginger and green onions. The soup is not as thick and fatty as true Hakata ramen found in Japan, but for SF, it's certainly a decent bowl that I would try again. The noodle portion is generous. Note: They put a dollop of black garlic oil in the ramen, which caught me by surprise because it's not documented on the menu. If I had known, I would have requested the server to leave it out.

Went around 2 on Friday and there were a couple other tables. I was deciding between the yuzu and shoyu and I'm so glad I got the shoyu. The broth was light and rich. The chashu was soo good it was delicate and a little fatty. It took like 5 mins after I ordered so service was pretty fast too

Been walking by the Coming Soon sign for way too long, so was quite excited to see they were finally opening. A decent amount of people, but not super crowded, at lunchtime. Maybe it's because they're new or maybe it's because people are just starting to return to the offices in the FiDi. Either way, it was great indulgent lunch compared to a boring sandwich or salad that is all too common in the neighborhood. Hanetsuki Gyouza: This is really fun to look at and to eat. It's like normal potstickers, but with a light browned bit of lattice connecting them all. It's so thin it barely has much taste, but the wispy crispy texture is nice against the doughy dumplings. And the gyoza themselves were plump and meaty pairing nicely with the vinegar, soy, chili sauce. Hiroshi Tonkotsu Ramen: Really liked the roast pork in this. Thick and tender with nice charred/grilled bits. Sometimes ramen places just call in the pork with a few thin bland slices. Lots of nice thinly sliced veggies and pickled things in the soup too, so felt kinda healthy. The broth was decent. It looked quite cloudy as tonkotsu should, but was missing some of the richness and complexity I've had elsewhere (e.g. Mensho, Ippudo). Still up there though. The noodles were thin and tender, generally pairing well with the soup. Though I would have enjoyed them a notch firmer / al dente.

Heard about this place on the news due to break-in and been wanting to give this place a try when it opens It was slow since not many have return to fidi and got my order fairly quick. Forgot which I ordered, but the soup was very good and full of flavor. Will definitely try again

4.5 stars. Welcome to San Francisco! Service was a bit slow but servers were super nice and friendly. But since it's fairly new and lunch rush hour, I understand. They have both pork and chicken broth to choose from which is awesome. Americans love tonkastu more but in Japan, chicken is more popular. Since I'm American, ha, I ordered the Hiroshi Tonkotsu Ramen. Comes with two thick slice of pork belly and half egg. Normally you don't see lotus root in the ramen but they do here and it's such a nice touch. Well I think so. The broth was tasty and the noodles were good. I do wish it was less done. I like my noodles more firm. But everyone's has their own preference. I also ordered the Nankotsu Karage (Fried Chicken Cartilage) and it's yummy. Not over fried and not over or under season. Perfect. I can't wait to come back and try everything else.
